Hair and Nail Disorders

What are Hair Disorders

Hair loss (alopecia) is by far the most common form of hair disorder we deal with. It is both physically and emotionally distressing for patients who experience hair loss. For this reason it is important to determine the cause of the hair loss as soon as possible and advise about possible treatments.

Other hair disorders are less common ranging from excessive hair growth to genetic hair disorders.

Hair loss

There are many types of hair loss. Factors to consider in determining the type of hair loss are:

  • Acute – recent onset
  • Chronic – longstanding
  • Pattern
    • localised
    • diffuse
    • patterned

A good history including general health, drugs, diet, hormonal factors and family history are all important in determining the type of hair loss. Blood tests and possibly a scalp biopsy can be important in determining the type of hair loss.

Hair Loss Treatment

Common treatable forms of hair loss include male and female pattern alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, infections and those related to drugs or systemic disease.

Depending on the type of hair loss, treatment is available – either to re-grow hair or prevent further loss. These include topical cremes and lotions, injections or oral therapy.

Dr Taylor has a special interest in hair disorders and has a wide knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of hair conditions.

Nail Problems

Nail problems are common, often unsightly, and a cause for unnecessary worry and concern. Causes can include:

  • physical – over exposure to water, gardening
  • chemical – nail cosmetics
  • infection – fungal
  • other skin diseases – e.g. psoriasis

An accurate diagnosis of the underlying nail problem is essential, prior to treatment. A variety of treatments are available for most common nail problems.

At Wellington dermatology, we can help diagnose and treat these distressing nail problems.
